A Personal Trainer’s Effortless Health Hacks: 3 Simple Strategies for Calorie Control

Life is crazy. As I write this, I’m walking the tight rope of raising my 6 month old, running my business, upkeeping my home, trying to keep a social life and fighting the existential crisis caused by the 24-hour news cycle. Oh, and I’m trying to stay healthy while doing all of it.

And I’m betting you can relate to that.

There are times in our lives when we have that extra capacity to take things a bit further, and there are times when we should focus on the biggest bang for your buck.

So, I’ve decided to start this series of effortless health hacks: How to Get Healthier Without Even Trying. Small changes you can make that will have large impacts on your well-being.

Today, we’re going to focus on 3 simple tricks to help with calorie control, an issue that most Americans struggle with.

1. Get an Oil Spritzer:

Ditch the pour, embrace the spray! A simple oil spritzer bottle can drastically reduce the amount of oil you use for cooking. When we pour oil directly into the pan, we often overdo it. A spritzer diffuses the oil, coating the pan evenly. Using a high smoke point oil like avocado oil makes this even more effective. Plus, it’s a better alternative to aerosol sprays, which have misleading nutrition facts and are hard on the environment.

2. Dairy: Go Lean, Not Mean:

Okay, whole milk lovers, I get it. But honestly, most of us won’t notice a huge difference by switching to low-fat or fat-free dairy. I made the switch years ago, and now a glass of whole milk or even 2% just feels like a lot.

Choosing low-fat cottage cheese and sour cream? No problem. This simple swap reduces saturated fat intake (the kind you want to limit for heart health) and often increases protein per serving (because there are less calories from fat). It’s an easy win for your health.

Of course, pick your battles. I personally will never drink fat free half-and-half in my morning coffee but trust me, a few dairy swaps can make a big difference.

3. Embrace the Zero-Calorie Beverage:

This one can be controversial, but hear me out: If you’re a soda drinker, switching to diet soda is a significant step in the right direction.

Yes, artificial sweeteners have their critics, but the overwhelming research shows they don’t have any negative health consequences in the amounts that we will drink them. Plus, you’ll be far healthier cutting out the sugar.

If you’re concerned, try seltzers or naturally flavored drinks with Stevia or monk fruit. But honestly, zero-calorie beverages can be a game-changer for reducing your overall calorie intake. Your body doesn’t register liquid calories the same way as solid food. You can easily drink hundreds of calories without feeling a bit of difference in your satiety.

The Takeaway:

These three simple swaps – oil spritzer, leaner dairy, and zero-calorie drinks – can significantly reduce your calorie intake without requiring major lifestyle overhauls. Try them out and see the difference!
