Fight Against Osteoporosis Through Exercise: Improve Bone Density with ONERO at NOVA Strong!

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury for adults over 65? In fact, it’s estimated that one in four older adults will fall each year. One in two women and one in four men will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Currently, the number of annual fractures is expected to increase from 1.9 to 3.2 million incidents by 2040.

It’s more apparent than ever that bone health and fall risk are crucial aspects to address for those at risk of developing osteoporosis and seeking to maintain long, active, and independent lives.

And after a long wait, I’ve got an exciting announcement for those individuals:

NOVA Strong has become the first in the DMV to offer ONERO, the world-renowned exercise program to combat osteoporosis.

ONERO was developed by Dr.Belinda Beck, founder of The Bone Clinic in Australia and one of the world’s foremost experts on Bone Health. Dr. Beck, a lifelong athlete and exercise researcher, became enthralled with the nuances of bone’s response to exercise through her own bone health journey.

Dr. Beck’s interest in bone health, fracture risk, and the response of bone mineral density to exercise led her to publish over 100 studies on the subject, including the infamous LIFTMOR trials.

The summation of her research has outlined exactly what we need to do to improve bone mineral density through exercise: expose them to heavy loads and high forces. It has also helped to explain why many other forms of exercise, though health-promoting, may not be effective in improving bone mineral density.

You see, just as our muscles need to be stressed with mechanical loading to grow stronger, so do our bones. The unique quality of our bones is that they require a much higher intensity of load to apply the appropriate stress to strengthen them. While a muscle may be able to be stressed with a light weight for many reps, a bone will not feel stressed until enough acute force is applied. When it comes to the types of exercise that provide sufficient benefits, high-intensity strength and impact training stand out in research.

It was this information that led Dr. Beck to create ONERO, the first evidence-based exercise program designed to combat osteoporosis and reduce the risk of falls and fractures.

ONERO is an 8-person specialized exercise class designed to safely progress and expose participants to the necessary strength and impact training to achieve the desired bone mineral density effects.

Recent Bone Clinic data shows the following improves from ONERO participants:

  • Lumbar Spine BMD:  Increase of 4.0 to 4.1% (P<.0001)
  • Total Hip BMD:  Increase of 1.5 to 3.4% (P<.0001)
  • Femoral Neck BMD:  2.4 to 4.5%  (P<.0001)
  • Lean Mass:  1.8 to 4.1% (P<.0001)
  • Functional Reach: 8.1 to 12.0% (P<.0001)
  • Timed up and go:  12 to 12.8% (P<.0001)
  • Tandem Walk:  Increase of 20.5% to 28.8% (P<.0001)
  • Sit to stand:  Increase of 10.7 to 17.6% (P<.0001)
  • Back Extensor Strength:  Increase of 27.8% to 49.1% (P<.0001)
  • Previous 12m falls:  Decreased 45% (P<.053).  They recorded 45 falls the year before, compared to 25 the following year.
  • Previous fractures:  Decreased 91.7% (P<.0001).  They recorded 24 fractures the year before, compared to 2 the following year.
