Why Fitness Should Feel Like Family: The Role of a Support System in Improving Your Health

Have you ever felt unwelcome or uncomfortable in a gym setting? You're not alone. Many people struggle to find a place where they feel supported and motivated in their fitness journey. I’ve talked to countless men and women who feel they don’t belong in the typical gym setting and that the industry isn’t set up for them.

Just the other day, I was on the phone with one of our long-term clients while she was away on travel. This is a lady who can squat her body weight and do more pushups than most men; she’s no stranger to working out. She knows exactly what to do and has no intimidation from exercise itself. Do you know what she told me about the commercial gym she was dropping in to use while traveling?

“I felt unwelcome”

I hate hearing that. As someone who has gotten so much value and support out of my relationship with fitness, it kills me that many individuals, especially women above a certain age, do not feel as though they belong in most gym settings.

At NOVA Strong Personal Training, we believe that a strong sense of community is essential for achieving your health and fitness goals. We offer a welcoming environment where everyone feels celebrated and empowered, not just because it’s the right thing to do (it is) but also because it’s the best way for us to truly help our clients.

The Science Behind Social Support

Numerous studies have demonstrated the profound impact that social support has on both physical and mental health. A 2024 study published in Nature found that strong social connections are associated with lower risks of all-cause mortality by 45% and cardio-cerebrovascular mortality by 60% in middle-aged and older adults. This means that having a supportive network can literally add years to your life, no sweat required!

Another article published in Frontiers in Psychology (2024) explored the link between social support and mental health. It revealed that social support acts as a buffer against mental health issues by reducing perceived stress levels. This suggests that having people to lean on during challenging times can significantly improve your emotional well-being.

Further research in BMC Psychiatry (2020) examined how different types of social support impacted mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study highlighted the importance of having a diverse support system, encompassing friends, family, and community groups, to navigate difficult periods.

The benefits of social support are not limited to any particular age group. A study published in Frontiers in Public Health (2024) focused on older adults in China and found that social support significantly impacted their subjective well-being.

This extensive body of research clearly demonstrates that social support isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a crucial component of a healthy and fulfilling life. It can reduce stress, boost mood, increase motivation, and improve overall health outcomes.

For those who may feel intimidated or isolated in traditional gym settings, the power of social support becomes even more important. Knowing you're not alone and that you have a team of people cheering you on can make all the difference in staying committed to your health journey.

How to Build Your Fitness Support System

Building a strong fitness support system is an investment in your health and well-being. Here are some actionable steps you can take:

  1. Find Your Tribe: Seek out fitness communities or groups that align with your interests and goals. Whether it's a running club, a yoga studio, or an online forum, connecting with like-minded individuals can provide invaluable encouragement and support.

  2. Partner Up: Find a workout buddy who shares your commitment to fitness. Having someone to exercise with can increase accountability, make workouts more enjoyable, and provide a source of mutual motivation. At NOVA Strong, we actually encourage our one-to-one clients to enlist workout buddies for extra support.

  3. Find a Coach or Trainer: A personal trainer or coach can offer expert guidance, personalized support, and help you stay accountable to your goals. It’s important that you find an actual professional who is going to give you a personalized approach and someone that you can connect with.

  4. Join Online Communities: There are countless online forums, social media groups, and virtual challenges dedicated to fitness and health. These platforms can provide a sense of connection, inspiration, and a wealth of information.

  5. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Help: If you're struggling with motivation, feeling overwhelmed, or facing challenges, reach out to your support system for encouragement and advice. Remember, you don't have to go it alone, and there are people around you who want to help you succeed!
